Riding the wave of increased awareness about health in recent years, the term organic has become synonymous with healthy, safe, green, and eco-friendly. Organic skin care has turned into the new way of doing things in the skin care industry. However, you’ve probably been at the store and seen many products claiming that they’re all-natural or organic. After reading the lengthy descriptions on the labels of products at organic shops, you’re sometimes left with this nagging confusion, and ask yourself, “How can I tell which products here are actually organic at organic shops?”

Most consumers think organic and all-natural are one in the same. In reality, all-natural doesn’t mean organic. All-natural hasn’t been rigorously defined and specified. On the other hand, the ingredients of organic products have gone through rigorous inspection to make sure they come from certified organic farms. In addition, the production of an organic product needs to conform to the requirements of a certifying institution. Common certifications are the extremely rigorous USDA Organic Certification, and the widely used international certification from France’s ECOCERT.

The USDA Organic Certification, implemented by the US Department of Agriculture, is the most highly recognized organic certification in the US.

USDA standards are notoriously strict. Products with a USDA logo printed on their packaging must have at least 95% organic ingredients.

The specific standards for USDA Organic Certification are listed below:

  1. Ingredients must not contain any chemical substances, and must not use chemical fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics, food additives or genetically modified organisms.
  2. The land used to grow a product’s ingredients must be free of chemical substances for at least three years.
  3. Must conduct regular inspections of production and sales records.
  4. Keep physical separation between the non-organic and organic products at an organic shop.
  5. Inspections on the production equipment and facilities of organic products.
  6. Only products made of exclusively organic ingredients can have “100% Organic” or the USDA logo on their labels.
  7. Products at organic shops that contain over 70% organic ingredients can say they’re “made with organic ingredients,” but cannot display a USDA logo.

ECOCERT Certification Company was established in France in 1991.

ECOCERT is one of the largest international organic certification institutions. Ingredients for products with this certification must be non-toxic, environmentally friendly and free from animal testing. Moreover, ingredients must absolutely not include artificial fragrance, coloring, and preservatives. The packaging of ECOCERT products must come from recycled materials. The ECOCERT Equitable Organic and Fair Trade Certification Standards of the organic shops are as follows:

  1. At least 95% of all ingredients must be from a natural origin.
  2. At least 95% of all plant-based ingredients must be organic.
  3. At least 10% of the entire product by weight must be organic.
